Special needs students trained in becoming peer tutors

Last week, Sosped Foundation (Finland) and Fryshuset organized a 5-days training for 12 young Swedish future peer – tutors from Fryshuset’s special needs upper secondary school (gymnasiesärskola). 

The training is one of the activities in project LEAPE, which is funded through the Erasmus+ programme on strategic partnerships for cooperation on innovation and the exchange of good practices.

The main goal of the project is to strengthen the inclusion of young people with developmental and mental health disorders and challenges in Swedish and Finnish society. The aim of the project is to provide trainings for young leaders and peer tutors based on the project partners mutual experience and knowledge in working with the target group(s). The project activities intend to provide to make a positive impact on their lives by enabling and enhancing social interaction and peer-support.

The aim of this first training activity was to share Sosped`s experiences and methods in working with ”culture houses”. Every of Sosped’s “culture house” provide their members with different group activities and support by peer-tutors or professionals, such as music bands and studio, creative writing, arts, craft and movie groups.

During the training in Stockholm,  professionals and peer-tutors from Sosped have offered activities based on comradeship support in various forms. All participants were urged to concentrate on their resources, strengths and opportunities to learn new things. Through creative group activities, they learned how to increase the possibilities take control of the direction of their life and to develop their social skills, as well as improving their work ability in everyday life.

As a peer – tutors, they learned, among other things, about the main aspects for creating support groups, planning activities and communication and discussion techniques. Moreover, they were motived to try how it is to be a group leader through organizing their own group activities and giving instructions to other members of the group.

The last day of the training, certificate on attendance were given to all peer tutors.


Fryshuset and Sosped plan to further develop their cooperation of working with youth who are at risk or are already face exclusion. For more information about Sosped and culture houses, http://www.sosped.fi/en/
